She can come off as soft spoken, as shy, even, but she’s not a girl to be trifled with. Somehow, when you combine soft spoken with a pretty face, you get a girl that seems just plain sweet on the outside, without realizing that she’s got a hard edge. Jean can see why people underestimate her, though; she is, admittedly, pretty cute. Her red hair is almost unnaturally shiny and well kept, though she’ll never admit just how much time she puts into it each day (spoiler: its a lot, though it’s gone down as she’s been introduced to modern beauty products). As for makeup, she prefers the minimalist approach-she’s got naturally clear, pale skin, so she normally prefers just a bit of mascara (did you know it comes in different colors now?! She’s a bit obsessed with the blue ones) and chapstick (cherry, obviously). And yeah, she is technically a teenage girl, and she’s got the body of one, too: she’s still only 5’4”, slender, a bit above average in the chest department. She’d really appreciate if people stopped looking at her like she’s some kind of lolita (yeah, she’s read the book. Hell, that’s her freaking generation. Or it was. She’s not quite sure what qualifies as “her generation” anymore). Seriously, though. Jean is allowed to be a pretty girl and wear flirty dresses without feeling like some kind tease. She was a bit ahead of her time, when she was still in her time. The only boy allowed to touch her is Scott. Her Scott. And even that’s not always true (see: when Scott’s being the worst). Maybe this is the problem, though; this bitterness Jean has ebbing beneath the surface. Maybe it has to do with the time she was born in, where she was expected to sit and be pretty and quiet and ornamental, or maybe it’s the way everyone in the future is so strangely cautious around her. But she’s got a spark in her, and it scares her, more than she wants to discuss. She’s got this anger, and she doesn’t know who or what she’s angry at, really, she’s just angry and scared all the time, but she’ll be damned if anyone gets to see it. Not Scott. Not James. Jean is a girl who is feeling rapidly trapped within the confines of her own head, and she’s not sure how to get out. She’s not sure if she wants to get out. Jean Grey doesn’t know what the future holds. But it’s not what you’d expect. HISTORY Jean Grey was born sometime in the early 1950s, which would technically make her a baby boomer, if she hadn’t been displaced in the time stream. Her father, John Grey, was a professor at King’s College, though his family lived in Terrytown, near the Hudson River. Jean was completely unaware of her mutant abilities until the age of ten, when her young friend Annie was struck by a car and killed. The trauma of watching her friend die was so great that it awakened the beginnings of Jean’s powers; in her desperation to save Annie, Jean unwittingly sent herself into her friend’s mind and experienced her death as it occurred. At the time, Jean’s parents believed that Jean was creating the entire experience as a way to cope with the trauma-they sent her to a therapist, in hopes that she might be able to overcome her crippling depression. Call it luck, call it fate-but Jean’s psychiatrist happened to be a colleague of one Charles Xavier, or, as most know him, Professor X. Without the knowledge of Jean’s parents, the doctor spoke to the Professor about Jean, bringing to his attention that Jean might be the kind of girl he’d be able to help. Xavier, like Jean, was a telepath, though he avoided addressing Jean’s telepathy for the most part. In fact, the Professor thought that it would be best to place mental blocks in Jean’s mind, for her own safety. Her powers were too volatile without the blocks; especially her telepathy, which was sending her into a deep depression. With these blocks in place, Jean was able to return to a more functional life-and she forgot about her telepathy almost entirely. Eventually, the Professor thought it might be best for Jean to come learn at his private institue, the Xavier School. There, Jean would receive a private school education, as well as more advanced training for her powers. The class was composed of Jean, Scott Summers, Bobby Drake, Hank McCoy and Warren Worthington III. Jean got along well with her peers, particularly Scott. Scott is Jean’s first love, though whether or not they’re going to be in it for the long run has yet to be seen, especially considering that the five of them have been transported to current times. Which is pretty stressful, all things considered. Hank McCoy, the one from the future, has brought the original team to the present to appeal to Scott Summers sense of empathy, or something. So now Jean has to deal with a few things: she’s got telepathy, her boyfriend is crazy in the future, and apparently she’s dead? Oh, and so’s the professor. Stranded in the future with no clue, Jean’s going to have to learn to fend for herself. And she better learn quick, because apparently she’s a bit more popular in the future. POWERS AND ABILITIES --TELEKINESIS Jean developed the beginnings of her telekinetic powers about three years ago, when she was 13. The power is still relatively new to her. Thanks to the help of Professor X, Jean has managed to hone her ability. However, it is still very volatile, and very rough around the edges. Jean is able to lift small objects without straining herself (which makes it super easy to clean her room) but she can barely levitate herself or other heavier objects without getting tired. The more she practices, the easier it gets to lift more challenging things, but she’s barely reached the first step of her overall potential. ROLE-PLAYING SAMPLE There is the blaring of a car’s horn, a girl’s cry and something like a wet thud and a sickening crunch; Jean falls to her knees and feels her skin catch on the pavement. Annie’s leg is bent the wrong way, the bone is poking out from her skin, and there’s blood pooling under her, darkening her dress. She’s silent, her eyes growing glassy-but Jean’s sobbing. She needs to do something, anything and suddenly, her body is blossoming with pain, all of the pain that Annie is feeling is suddenly hers as well. Jean feels Annie’s lungs gasp for air that they cannot retain, feels her heart continue to pump the now useless lifeblood in her draining veins. It hurts, unlike anything Jean’s ever felt before. She feels Annie’s last thoughts floating in her own head, leaving like wisps. She watches, feels as Annie’s heart stops. Jean feels death firsthand, choking, sputtering, the invisible wounds spreading across her skin, killing her slowly. She is dead, Jean is dead and- Her eyes snap open. Jean bolts upright, her hands gripping the stark sheets of her bed. She’s been sweating in her sleep, leaving the sheets damp. Her legs are tangled in the blankets, which cling to her like a second skin. She lets out a small, choked sob, hugging her arms to herself and rocking slowly in her bed. It’s not even her own bed-it’s the bed at the Xavier School. No, not the Xavier School. The Jean Grey School. The name still gives her chills, and now, on the heels of her nightmare, the name makes her retch. Jean quickly pulls herself out of her bed and runs to the bathroom, barely managing to kneel before the porcelain god before her dinner comes up. She’s had nightmares of Annie’s death a thousand times before-it’s vividly burned into her brain, like a brand or a scar. The moment she first got her powers, the moment she felt death wrap itself around her. She’s dreamt of it a thousand times but never this vividly, never like she was experiencing it firsthand all over again. It makes her legs wobble as she stands and washes her hands, as she brushes her teeth to rid her mouth of the taste. She does not want to go back to bed, opting instead to run the shower. The hot water pound against her shoulder blades but does nothing to quell her nerves, so she turns it hotter still, arching her back as the water begins to burn. She used to be able to go home on the weekends, when she was in her own time. Now she’s come to an unfamiliar future, she’s dead-Jean Grey is as dead as Annie-and she has no idea how it happened. She has no idea who’s she’s supposed to be, or what people expect from her, though their whispers frighten her. Scott’s distant, using the same hot and cold attitude he always does, and it’s driving her insane. She clenches her fists, not noticing that the water has stopped hitting her back. It’s blocked mid air by an invisible shield, curving back upwards. She hates this future. She hates Beast for dragging her here, she hates the new school, she hates not knowing anyone here or how anything in this strange new future works. Jean rubs the back of her neck, only now noting that the shower water is floating above her head-in her shock, she releases all of it with a gasp, causing it to drop heavily on to her as if poured from a bucket. She furiously wipes the red hair out of her eyes. This is so, so messed up. It’s messed up beyond words. She digs her fingers into her scalp, feeling the tears from her eyes mixing with the pounding water of the shower. Her knees hit the bottom of the shower, and for a moment she was reminded of the pavement. Her head began to throb, so fiercely that she could feel it behind her eyes. Whispers of dreams began to cloud into her mind, too many thoughts at once, too much at once. Pulling at her roots, she forcibly blocks out the foreign thoughts filtering into her head, letting out a choked sob. She moves to a sitting position, wrapping her arms around her knees. The shower water beats down on her head, and she shakes. application was passed by username | [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellpadding,0,true][atrb=valign,top][atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=style, width: 40px;] M A R V E L G I R L |
