It has been said that through time all wounds are healed. Not many can deny that the stinging blow of betrayal does not cause the blood to boil and fists to tighten, the thirst for revenge to grow seemingly unquenched by the exchange of a trivial apology. Yet like smoke over water the pain does subside and the ire declines, and so few are those damages ever-lasting – but not for all. How easy it must be for a country as a whole to be hailed as a land of tolerance and equality, a land of opportunity and prosperity, while behind closed doors lets its people turn their backs on their own kind and deny the rights so eagerly sought. Six years might have passed since the Brotherhood-led rebellion against the government and the subsequent battle at Alcatraz Island, but humanity has not learned its lesson. Nor has mutantkind forgotten how easily it was for the nation to draw back in fear and strike out with the mutant cure – a hallowed end to the mutant infestation that plagued the world. Albeit six years passed in relative normalcy, there is an unforgettable tension within the unspoken truce between humans and mutants. Six years since the emergence of the once voluntary procedure turned governmental weapon. Six years of feigned acceptance of ones now powerless neighbor.
But like the tiniest of cracks that can cause the eventual downfall of a dam, whispers of the cure’s failure spread like embers to kindling. Stirring the slumbering thoughts and feelings of the accursed ones, igniting the rage that had lain down to unsettled slumber for six long years. The bruised and the burdened don’t forget so easily, nor does the soldier who finds himself back on the frontline of battle. Time did not heal the shame of defeat and the twist of the knife in the backs of mutants everywhere. With the cure’s steadfast hold breaking at long last, time merely fed the swelling rage of a slaughtered people looking for the sweet taste of revenge.
