A tad on the short side with a head of blond and eyes of blue, she’s quite pretty but not super model material. In terms of her clothing, Haley tries to keep up with the current fashion trends. Her taste in clothes is stylish, but at the same time practical and not too attention seeking. She is a big fan of jackets and jewelry, tending to wear both even when circumstances wouldn’t really be suitable for it. Haley has a bouncy personality, often being over eager, blunt, and known for not thinking before she speaks. She has a strong sarcastic side, which, when coupled with her bluntness, can be mistaken as mean if the person doesn’t really understand Haley’s sense of humor. As her parents have more than made up for their absence during her childhood with their understanding and acceptance of her mutant-hood, Haley has gotten over her need to act out to get attention from them. Going to Mutant High is a fresh start and she intends on starting with the right foot. As such, Haley has tried to put her old negative personality traits away. For the most part she has succeeded, but occasionally they still filter through. Eg being more catty than she meant to be, judging people based solely on looks, being excessively intimidating to people she doesn’t like, believing the law is more like a loose set of guidelines, acting out to get attention, etc. For the most part Haley is a happy and charming girl. Her smile lights up a room, she loves to laugh and mess around, she makes friends easily, she’s loyal and tries to be kind, she’s intelligent and well educated (she purposely failed exams in her youth as yet another way to get her parents attention), resourceful and more than happy to get her hands dirty. Altogether a nice young lady. But she was bad in the past, so when needs be, she can quickly slip back into that old persona. Full of enough confidence to enter glaring matches with Logan quite certain that she’ll win, armed with a silver tongue, well versed in the arts of theft, carjacking, running from the cops, and breaking and entering. And with an presence that just screams intimidation and slight insanity. HISTORY Haley is the only child of Greg and Fiona O’Connor. She had a comfortable childhood, if somewhat lonely. Both her parents were doctors, and so spent most of their time at work. Haley was well looked after, left in the capable hands of her various nannies throughout the years. But she always felt neglected by her parents. When her teenage years arrived Haley started to act out. Only minor things, sneaking a couple of smokes at school cause it was the ‘cool’ thing to do, stealing the odd top or bit of jewelry from the shops, etc. But as time went on and her parents still didn’t notice her dastardly deeds, Haley stepped up her game. At 15 she started smoking for real, throwing regular underage drinking sessions in as well. She acted out at school, becoming a regular at Friday night detentions. She even went so far as to get a tattoo for her 16th birthday. Finally her parents decided to intervene. Until then they’d let the nanny handle it, giving Haley the occasional parental lecture when they could spare the time. But now she’d gone too far. It was one thing to misbehave, it was another thing entirely to steal several hundred dollars from her parents, then come home the next day so drunk she was barely standing, and with a line of tattoos down her back. Greg cashed in his holiday time, earning himself 6 months off work. Haley finally had her wish, her father was home and his attention was focused solely on her. Unfortunately for Haley, reality wasn’t like what she had imagined. She didn’t frolic around the park feeding ducks, nor go for weekend drives out into the country to do some sight seeing in the mountains. No, Greg became the disciplinary father figure. For the next 6 months Haley was grounded, expected home no later than 5pm. Her smokes and booze were thrown out. Tutors were hired to get her grades back on track. Greg even made her throw out her old punk clothes and get some attire more suited for a lady her age. He watched her like a hawk, and by the time he went back to work Haley’s desire for family bonding time had completely evaporated, along with her old vice addictions and desire to act out. Haley returned to the simple life she’d had before puberty, keeping friends with a nicer crowd, doing well in school. She was your typical teenage girl, with the exception of 12 Chinese characters down her spine. But this normality didn’t not last for long. 6 months later was her 17th birthday, and 1 month after that her mutation kicked in, changing her life once more. She’d heard about mutants, had even been friends with one in the past. But Haley never really paid them much mind. Sure they sounded cool, but she never thought she’d ever become one herself. But, having managed to survive being blown up, Haley decided that the manifestation of her powers was definitely a good thing. A couple of weeks passed as she glared at the mirror. At first she was simply staring at the strange blackness seeping from the Dog tattoo, but eventually she tried making her other tattoos do it too, stumbling upon the Ox, then Monkey, and finally unlocking the Horse. That was when her family received a very special visitor. Her parents knew she was a mutant, after all, they had watched as her body had rebuilt itself over those days in hospital following the explosion. So the representative from the School didn’t need to keep it’s true nature secret. They explained that it was a school for mutants like Haley, to help them understand their powers and learn in a safe environment away from the rising anti-mutant public opinion. After talking it through as a family, Haley opted to leave. Her mutant nature wasn’t exactly private considering everyone in her hometown of Monroe, North Carolina had heard the wonderful story of the girl who survived being blown up. Better to make a new start, and try and understand just how her powers worked under the safe and watchful eye of more experienced mutants. POWERS AND ABILITIES Haley has an unusual in power in that she actually has 12. Her powers are directly linked to the 12 Chinese zodiac symbols that are tattooed down her spine. By activating a symbol she gains a power related to that sign. When a symbol is activated the ink bleeds out to turn the surrounding veins black. Only one symbol can be active at a time. Similarly, Haley cannot turn off her power, and must always have a symbol active. For practicality, this symbol is usually the Dog. When Haley switches between symbols, it generally takes 1.5 seconds. This may not seem like long, but when she’s used super speed to place herself between a friend and an oncoming bullet, then needs to switch to immortality to survive her self-sacrifice human shield technique, 1.5 seconds is more than likely a fatally long pause. Activating a symbol is like turning on a glow stick. With a mental command Haley cracks the symbol, and in the moment after that the ink quickly colors the surrounding veins. Deactivating (aka switching to another symbol) works in reverse. Once the next symbol has been cracked, the ink is absorbed back into the former symbol at the same rate ink spreads from the new one. Dragon: Combustion Haley is able to accelerate molecules to the point of combustion. Usually she uses this ability by turning her hands into flame throwers, projecting a blast of fire 30 meters in whatever direction her palm is facing. Aside from this wanton destruction, the only other application of this power she’s come up with is combustion touch, setting whatever she places her hand on immediately ablaze until her hand is removed. Snake: Invisibility This symbol allows Haley to turn invisible. Like the invisible man, this power does not mean people cannot hear, touch, or smell Haley. If she bumps into a person, they will feel it. Likewise, if it rains or she gets covered in paint, her shape will become visible. The flaw with this power is that it requires enormous concentration to turn it on or off. So, once Haley goes invisible, she tends to stay that way until she deactivates the Snake symbol. Horse: Healing Haley can heal by touch. The more extensive the injuries, the longer it takes for her to heal them, meaning the person may die before she can fix them. She cannot heal the decapitated, and tends to avoid replacing lost limbs. Using this power drains Haley’s own vitality. By over using her healing touch she can cause herself to faint and enter a short coma. As the addition of her own life force to another’s is what speeds up the healing process, Haley cannot heal herself, as she does not have a 2nd source of life force to speed things up. Ie Haley can only heal others, not herself. Monkey: Animal Mimicry Haley can transform into any animal she has seen. This includes pictures of animals (aka dinosaurs and mythical beasts), native animals of Earth, and the occasional animal-like alien species. She can only do full transformations (i.e. she can’t grow lion claws and avoid growing the fur and tail as well). Whilst in animal form she cannot communicate with other people, unless she were an animal such as the monkey who has the fingers with which she might write a message, or a mythical beast with telepathic or speech capabilities. Haley also tends to gain some of the animal’s traits, i.e. a taste for raw fish after being a shark, an overwhelming desire to leap from tall places after being a branching owlet, a lowered IQ after being a goldfish, etc. Haley cannot mimic humans, nor humanoid aliens (e.g. Shi’ar). Sheep: Astral Projection By entering a state of mediation, Haley can send her spirit onto the astral plane. To others it looks like a transparent ghost of herself has exited her body to enter reality. Generally Haley uses her spirit form to scout ahead, it’s intangibility rendering obstacles such as walls and guns useless. However, as her consciousness is with the projection, her real body is left unprotected and seems to be deeply asleep. Her spirit can only travel short distances, about 20km. Any further than that and she risks severing her connection with her body and becoming trapped in spirit form. Haley is also not very good at the possession aspect of astral projection, and thus is vulnerable to being possessed herself by other beings on the astral plane. Rooster: Levitation Not quite flight, Haley can use this power to hover through the air. It is similar to flight, but at slower speeds as her levitation is a limited form of telekinesis. Hence, Haley is also able to make objects aside from herself levitate, such as books, chairs, and even cars. The more weight she has to lift, the harder and slower it is. This power is mentally draining and Haley has been known to suffer severe migraines if she pushes her abilities. Tiger: Yin and Yang Manipulation A difficult power to describe. In essence, it is balance. It’s Haley’s most powerful ability, but also her most dangerous. She could use it to increase the chance of good luck e.g. her foe might trip on an ill placed ball bearing and fall down a flight of stairs. But this in turn would result in subsequent bad luck to a similar degree e.g. Haley stubs her toe, falling underneath a truck just as it’s depositing it’s cargo of several sacks of potatoes, which land on top of Haley. This power allows her to do anything, but Haley doesn’t dare use it for anything more than tiny things, as the repercussions of a major act could be catastrophic. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. As Haley is the force that creates the action, all reactions are directly aimed towards her. E.g. creating a tiny black hole to destroy a particularly overpowered foe, causing a miniature big bang to occur afterwards, explosively emitting the same amount energy that was captured in the singularity, at a lethally effective distance away from Haley. As a result, Haley rarely uses this power. Rat: Animation The Rat grants Haley the ability to animate inanimate objects, including everything from light bulbs to drawings. Similar to her ability to heal with her hands, Haley can grant life to an object by touch. Usually she uses this ability as a distraction technique, or to find out what happened in the area in the past e.g. a door witnessed a murder and could possibly give Haley a description of what happened and who did it. In most cases Haley keeps her hand on the object, feeding it life, returning it to non-animation once her hand is removed. However, with a great deal more effort, she can sustain the feed from a distance. But this wears her out faster and she cannot animate the object for more than 30min. Like her healing, overuse of this ability causes Haley to pass out and enter a coma that varies in length according to how far past her limits she goes. Ox: Super Strength Haley’s strength is enhanced to superhuman levels. She is strong enough to bend metal like a paperclip, juggle trucks with one hand, and at her extreme even lift an entire skyscraper. But, whilst naturally her durability is enhanced with this ability, it is not nearly as effective as her strength. This means over-stressing her muscles will lead to injury, just as a weight lifter harms themselves lifting the wrong way, or too much. After using this power Haley tends to usually come away with a sprain or two. With overuse she can break bones, dislocate limbs, and tear whole muscles from the bone, so she tends to try to avoid pushing her limits. Pig: Heat Vision Unlike the Dragon where Haley has mastered the art of spontaneous combustion, the Pig grants Haley a form of laser vision i.e. instead of playing with flames, she’s messing with lasers. This power lets her blast concussive beams of heat energy from her eyes, which vary in intensity. Meaning she can shoot a large concussive beam which is designed to incapacitate without injury due to the lukewarm temperature of the beam, or melt through the hull of a spaceship with a beam far hotter than the sun. Using this power too much runs the risk of injuring her eyes. Minor cases are similar to getting sunburn on your cornea, her vision becomes blurred and strobes. Major cases of overuse can result in temporary blindness that varies in length according to how badly she overtaxed her abilities. Dog: Immortality The Dog makes it impossible for any injury to kill Haley. Even decapitation, dismemberment, and cremation would not finish her off. Eventually, from her ashes, Haley would regenerate. Admittedly it would likely take several weeks to completely regenerate her entire body, but most other injuries heal almost immediately. A limb re-grows in several days to a week depending of it’s an arm or a leg. When a limb is removed, the limb dies and a new one grows to take its place. When her head is removed, neither the body nor the head die. Both remain animated for a week, as it is easier to mend the cut through the neck reattaching the head to the body, than it is to re-grow an entire body from a head. As Haley must always have a symbol active, she tends to use the Dog as it guarantees she cannot be killed in a surprise attack or unfortunate accident. Unlike the Horse the Dog has no side effects from overuse (aka being killed several dozen times a day). Haley has no idea why this is so, but tends to think it is linked to the Tiger. Immortality in exchange for increasing her good luck:bad luck ratio from 50:50 to 30:60. Rabbit: Super Speed Even more powerful than her super strength, Haley is able to move at insane speeds. The sound barrier is no match for her, and light speed could potentially be achievable. But, like with her strength, Haley is not proportionately durable. The faster she goes, the more dangers she faces. At extreme speeds even raindrops can become deadly little bullets. Likewise, the faster she goes, the less maneuverable she becomes. Her speed is the straight line kind, the tighter and more abundant the corners, the slower she has to go. Like her strength, her speed also tends to injure her. She almost always rips her leg muscles to shreds, being crippled with cramps for the few moments it takes to switch to the Dog and heal. NOTES: I’ve written this powers list to explain Haley’s maximum potential. As it stands she’s brand new to her abilities. Currently she can only access the Horse (healing), Monkey (animal mimicry), Ox (super strength), and Dog (immortality). Similarly, she only has access to the most basic applications of these powers. Eg she can only mimic an animal she is directly looking at (ie the bird on the windowsill, or the image of a Griffin she just found on Google), and can currently only just manage to lift a truck with her super strength. I am aware that several powers in this list are restricted, so if you do not wish Haley to have them, I can say that she is currently unable to activate those powers. I’ll even go so far as to say she’ll never be able to activate them if you wish, but I can’t remove them as it would defeat the core aspect of her power. She needs 12 powers of the zodiac, but it’s perfectly fine to only have access to 4 of them haha. ROLE-PLAYING SAMPLE With a huge sigh of relief, Haley dropped the pile of bags she’d been lugging around the mall for the last hour into the boot of her car. An amused smirk played across her lips when her arms went from feeling like lead, to lighter than air. Closing the trunk, she made her way around to the drivers seat. Her little blue beetle made short work of the car park, and was soon happily humming down the highway back towards home. Several kilometers down the road, heading the opposite direction, was a fuel tanker that was sounding far less happy. A high pitched whine blared down the hill as the driver kept on struggling to push the gear box out of 3rd and reach the top of the rise. Haley flicked on her radio, loud music quickly filling the car as she rapidly approached the oncoming truck. With a sickening screech, followed by a series of fading metallic thuds, the tanker driver finally got the gear box out of 3rd… and into air… the entire gearbox had sheered and fallen off, taking the brake line with it, effectively leaving the truck in neutral, hurtling down the hill it had just managed to crest, with no brakes. Haley’s eyes widened as the tanker sped at ludicrous speeds down the slope, the driver rapidly losing control, drifting into the oncoming lane… Haley’s lane. She had but a split second to realize what was about to happen, that there was no way to swerve out of the way in time, and to register that the truck was a fuel tanker. Even if she did survive the initial collision of massive truck vs tiny beetle, the thing would likely blow up anyway, ensuring she was dead. The last thing Haley felt was her spine crack as her muscles tensed for impact. Unbeknownst to her, that was also when her mutant abilities were triggered thanks to her enormous adrenaline rush, the Dog symbol quickly coloring her veins as truck and car became one. Moments later a massive fireball exploded into the sky as the tanker’s fuel combusted. When firemen finally put the blaze out, they managed to pull out the crispy remains of Haley. Left under a white blanket on the roadside whilst the crash site was investigated and the remains of the truck driver recovered, Haley’s body started the slow process of rebuilding. By the time the coroner arrived, Haley’s internal organs had healed to the point that her heart beat and breath had feebly flared back into existence. Incredulous paramedics rushed her to intensive care. For the next 2 weeks Haley remained unconscious, her body silently stitching itself back together. The doctors had done some initial surgery when Haley had first been brought in, but when they reviewed the crash reports and noted she was declared dead by several paramedics, and that she was healing far to rapidly for a normal person, they put their scalpels aside. Mutants were no new thing to the hospital, they had dozens of cases of newly awoken mutants running in begging them to get rid of their new scaled skin and bone spikes. Haley’s healing rate was exponential and obviously not human. It was probable she really had been dead when paramedics pulled her from the wreak, she had simply healed herself back to life. Haley woke up with a well earned groan. Her head was killing her, her whole body hurt, she’d sacrifice a baby to the Pagan gods for a glass of water, and why the heck was she in hospital? The moment the thought entered her head Haley’s memory came rushing back. The tanker, inevitable doom. Fumbling around on her right, she found the bed remote, thumbing the up button. As her head rose, she took stock of her injuries. Surprisingly she still had all her limbs. Wincing as her muscles protested, Haley pulled the sheet off, noting with even more disbelief that she only had the odd bandage here and there. A frown of confusion darkening her face, Haley clicked the call button. Hopefully one of the doctors would explain what the heck was going on. application was passed by username | [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellpadding,0,true][atrb=valign,top][atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=style, width: 40px;] Z O D I A C |
